Tech Tip: The Fording Plug

(as in fording a river)

We all know our Land Rover vehicles are built to cross raging rivers, deep soupy mud holes etc. But, before we take the plunge you should always check water or mud depth, locate any hidden hazards and then install your fording plug.

The fording plug is used on all manual transmission Land Rovers, to prevent water, mud or other contaminants from getting into the clutch and bell housing area, when fording. When not in use the plug is stored in a bracket mounted to the bell housing on a Series Land Rover and in the tool roll of a Defender or Discovery. It is important to remove the plug from the bell housing when you are not fording because the hole acts as a drain hole for any oil leaks. If the plug is left in place the backed up oil could contaminate the clutch disc.

If you lost the part or don't have a fording plug, we have these located here for Series, Defender and Discovery vehicles.
